Slow Flight and Stalls

Today was a fun day....initially it was looking a little gloomy with the overcast sky and predictions of scattered showers this afternoon. But, thankfully the rain held off and I was able to have my lesson. The wind was pretty gusty today on the ground, but once we were airborn, it surprisingly wasn't bad at all. Here's N172SJ, the Cessna 172 I flew my lesson in today. We made our way out to the Southwest practice area flying between the the prisons near Walpole and just West of Foxboro.

We went out and made good use of our time out there, we went straight into the new skills. Josh my instructor would first demonstrate the skills, and then I would perform them. Today we covered slow flight in a clean configuration (flaps up), dirty configuration (full flaps), power-on stalls, and power-off stalls. All in all they went very well, I just need to fine tune my attention to my directional heading. Everything is starting to click and make sense. Today I don't think I got nearly as overwhelmed as I was yesterday. Here's a shot of one of the famous New England landmarks I continue to mention in my discussions with people as I talk about my training. Gillette Stadium from approximately 2000 feet. After the little bit of maneuvering to get this shot in, we headed back up to Norwood Memorial Airport to land and discuss the skills we just practiced. Here's another shot, this one of us following 95, and the last, just a candid shot of my instructor Josh and myself. I was really scared....haha. Josh even managed to ask if I've ever experienced any negative G's before. And then proceeded to ask how my stomach was. I told him I didn't have any problems with rollercoasters and skydiving and the such. So he pulled a quick maneuver, kinda like going up and over and steep hill really fast, or getting pulled over the top of that rollercoaster hill. Everything went into complete weightlessness momentarily and stuff was shifting in the cockpit all over. It was unbelievably fun! I can't wait to get some spin training during my commercial and CFII in the acrobatic plane. Good times today. Tonight I will be reviewing flight lessons 3 and 4 for my double block of lessons tomorrow.

On to more adventures......
