I arrived at Horizon Aviation in Norwood just around 10 as I planned - except what I didn't know is that they had a film crew in there as they were doing promo shots for their website. Both video and still pictures. So I may be famous soon enough! Also, they asked if they could do a video interview of me since I am technically a career student there. So that could be really cool! I took my stage 2 exam as planned and passed it without too many problems. We went up and tracked a few VORs, pulled a few maneuvers including slow flight right over the Wrentham Outlets into a 40 knot headwind that left us with a 14 knot groundspeed - aka 15 miles per hour. It was crazy! I took a video of it which I will put up later this weekend so you can see what I mean.......we were basically hovering! It was unreal! We came back to the airport and did a few simulated short and soft-field take offs and landings. We had a forced go around due to a helicopter on the runway that didn't move out of the way in time - they really pissed off ATC with that one! Boy was I glad I wasn't them!
Since this was my double block, I was supposed to go on my first cross country flight down to Hyannis. Except the reports were showing the weather deteriorating, and with wind gusting to 40 knots down on the Cape. So the flight was a no-go. Instead, we used the time to go over cross country planning and all the time, fuel burn, headings, and all that jazz calculations that go along with the planning. This is going to be my Achilles Heel! At least I have a few days to doing a few plans ahead of time before my actual cross country flight which is planned for next Friday. Though, next Thursday is planned to be my first night flight! I'm so excited. If all continues on the same pace that I have been on, I will have my private pilot license by December!
